History of Podgy

As the summer draws to a close, a flourish of creative activity comes to fruition at the Turnpike Gallery with the exhibition ‘Art Factory’. 3 Wigan artists: Margaret Jackson, Tony Knox and Ann McArdle, were selected from open submission to be ‘resident’ in the gallery for three weeks.

Each artist has set up a studio in the gallery and invited the public to investigate their practice – looking at what they make, how they make it and why. In addition to visitors being able to just pop in and see artists at work, each artist gave a talk about their work and led three workshops with a variety of members of the public, including children, young people and adults.
The artists’ work includes painting, drawing, mosaic and photography, and the exhibition included pieces made by each during the residency, alongside works made by members of the public during the workshops.

Art Factory is a regular feature of the Turnpike programme and has become established over the past four years. Key to its success is the idea that the gallery is a place for activity and experimentation, and dialogue between professional artists and the local community. The ambitious and much publicised Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead opened recently, and promotes itself as an ‘art factory’. Remember, you saw it happen first in Leigh!
