“NON STANDARD”

‘Mass production - the production of large amounts of standardised products on production lines.’ (R.D Illustrated Dictionary)

In removing objects from their origin of standardised mass production and putting them into a new context of uniqueness I am able to subvert them from the vernacular and place them in a fine art context. I use non-traditional materials, fabric and toys, for my painting medium to explore surface pattern and colour. The printed fabrics, polka dots, stripes and checks, when exposed as large flat areas create optical effects giving background movement to the attached toys.

The toys, although standardised items of mass production, have subtle differences imposed through wear and tear so each assumes individuality. More recently I have begun to exploit the faults and flaws in mass-produced fabrics as ‘found paintings’. By removing objects from their origin of mass production and putting them in a new and unique context I am able to subvert their standardisation.Implicit in the subversion of standardisation is the celebration of individuality and non-conformity.
