April 2004.
I approached and researched a wrestling school situated in the Wigan
, called The Garage Pro Wrestling School. During this consultation,
I explained my project for the transVoyeur Exhibition and I wanted
to stage a performance as a wrestler, but to bring an iconic character
inspired from the popular culture of wrestling within my artistic
explorations. I started to train as a professional wrestler to gain
further insight in to the world of the professional wrestling arena
and the alter egos embellished in their characters.
My previous
art has explored themes of the hero and in particular the wrestler
in modern society. I have also considered the semiotics of the insects,
such as the moth and the connotations of this creature being one
of searching for allusions (i.e., the light bulb to the sun). Furthermore,
the moth within other cultures denotes the soul. Here we have two
aspects of the creature similar to the disposition of the wrestler,
in the sense they aspire to something other than their natural being,
an extension of their perception, modified by contemporary societies
idealizations of the self and the human form and condition and so
forth.
This initial
research will be further extended to considering societies understanding
of the hero and in particular the wrestler, additionally what the
moth constitutes to them. I will consult with a range of groups
in the Northwest, such as various ages, different ethnic backgrounds,
the body politics in gender and sexual orientation. This will also
be extended from this year 2004 being the Olympics and wrestling
in particular stemming from classical origins during the Ancient
Greeks culture.
It was my
objective to create a hero character, such as a wrestler and the
embodiment of the moth and actual become this manifestation. Through
the various disciplines of this sport and entertainment, I will
document each development stage, culminating in a final live wrestling
match. From this research material and documented source, I intend
to adapt it and modify to be represented within a gallery context,
but combining it with a live performance. A fusion of all the elements
researched and conceptualized in an intervention of the gallery
space, possibly with light projections and/or audience participation.
